‘Human resources and irksome tools. A workshop on Use’

The second of five symposium-like gatherings, organised by Cally Spooner in which she explored the visibility of management, power and neuropolitics, to consider broader questions around employing, depending upon and delegating to others.
A Workshop on Use mapped out conditions of surrogacy, considering this as the hosting of other people's labour in one's own body, and how this may be validated. Delving into questions of instrumentality, the interdependency of living bodies and technical objects, props, muses and models, as well as the use of commodities and ergonomic design, a number of participants discussed their multiple agencies as producers, performers, hosts, or other. In a culture of sharing and service economies, of ranking, reviewing rating and outsourcing in which humans could be seen to be servicing other humans to service themselves, this second gathering considered how social relations, solo bodies, and will power (the most intimate scales of self-management) are primary tools, and beyond this, how we are programmed to be eased and serviced by the furniture, environments and others around us.
