‘Gravitational Feel’ and ‘Sudden Rise to a Given Tune’ at Tate Modern

Fred Moten and Wu Tsang presented Sudden Rise at a Given Tune as part of the second night of Tate’s first BMW Tate Live Exhibition. The performance comprised a live reading, including aspects of the publication Who touched me? and a video projection featuring documentation of the book’s accompanying performance, Gravitational Feel. The sculptural installation of the same name, was installed in the Transformer galleries for public access across the live exhibition’s ten days.
Situated in the Tanks, the BMW Tate Live Exhibition: Ten Days Six Nights brought together an intergenerational selection of artists that have been invited to stage their work as a space that extends a form of hospitality or community, to other artists and visitors alike. The artists created images of networks and forms of participation that link natural environment with social media, organic and technological, human and non-human. The daytime installations acted as springboards for six nights of ticketed live performances. The live nights showcased both established and emerging artists working across performance, film, sound and dance. Alongside Sudden Rise at a Given Tune, Night Two of the Live Exhibition included performances by Min Tanaka and Paul Maheke, the first of two Kizomba Occasions by Ligia Lewis, and films by CAMP and Daïchi Saïto’s.
