‘Tongue PhD’ at The Kitchen
Friday 23 September 2016, 8pm / Saturday 24 September 2016, 8pm / The Kitchen, New York
Ieva Misevičiūtė, Master in Political Science, Master in Cultural Analysis, will finally get her PhD, in one hour, right in front of you, granted by her tongue! The tongue bares the memory of the animal, the instinctual, but also is the main tool with which we express our humanness. It is a bridge between madness and intelligence. I want to get my PhD from THIS institution!
Tongue PhD is a new eclectic solo performance by artist Ieva Misevičiūtė. This ambitious piece consists of twelve chapters each investigating a different metaphoric lens of the tongue. Tongue PhD fuses elements of physical theater, academic reverie, dance, and Butoh. A pink set with no shadows and no straight lines will soon transport you to the most potent cavity where theory and rhythmic, animalistic loops mingle on equal footings. Long live muscle moving muscle!
Tongue PhD is produced by CAC Vilnius and co-produced by Playground (Leuven). The performance is further developed during a residency at The Kitchen with the commissioning support of Jerome Foundation; and is made possible with support from Howard Gilman Foundation, The Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation, and in part by public funds from New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
