‘The Print of Sleep’ at If I Can’t Dance

2 – 6.30pm / Event and Duration Introduction / If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution at Cygnus Gymnasium, Amsterdam

On Sunday 24 January 2016, If I Can’t Dance celebrated the launch of Edition VI – Event and Duration with an introductory event that included lectures, presentations, screenings, installations and performances from Edition VI’s commissioned artists—Leonor Antunes, Alex Martinis Roe, Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa, and Joke Robaard—and Performance in Residence researchers—Erin Alexa Freedman and Lili Huston-Herterich, Fred Moten and Wu Tsang, Peter Pál Pelbart, and Vivian Ziherl—to provide a public introduction to their respective projects.

The event took place at the Cygnus Gymnasium in Amsterdam—a building designed between 1952 and 1956 by the Dutch architect J.B. Ingwersen (1921–1996), and inspired by Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation and its principals of living, functionalism and frank expression of materiality. Originally built as a technical college, for which the transparency of the building’s design and construction served as a learning model, today the building is in operation as a school for secondary students.

For the event, Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa contributed by presenting the second performance in his cycle of works within the school’s gymnasium—a typology of space often used as a community meeting point in disaster relief. Entitled The Print of Sleep the work is a meditative, dreamlike scene that combines printmaking, varied human surfaces and bedtime rituals.

The Print of Sleep (2016) was commissioned by If I Can't Dance, Amsterdam and first performed on 24 January 2016 as part of the Introductory Event to VI (2015-2016), Event and Duration. The work was subsequently presented and recorded on 30 April 2016 as part of Sunrise Sunset at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin.
